Peter Preuss

Biography

Peter Preuss is co-founder and President of The Preuss Foundation for Brain Tumor Research. Incorporated in early 1985, The Preuss Foundation was inaugurated with an initial gift of $3.5 million given by Mr. and Mrs. Peter Preuss. In order to oversee the research progress of the projects funded, Mr. Preuss now heads the foundation full-time. In October of 1987, Mr. Preuss was appointed to the Advisory Committee to the Director, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland, by the Honorable Otis R. Brown, then-Secretary, Department of Health & Human Services. He also attends up to 10 international conferences per year, and presents The Preuss Foundation Conference on Brain Tumor Research, as well as an active roster of Preuss Foundation seminars.

Mr. Preuss's background, as a leader in the high-tech field, greatly influenced both the development of the foundation and the shared research concept of the foundation-sponsored seminars and conferences. He has contributed his business management skills to the area of medical research.

Mr. Preuss is a member of the Board of the National Brain Tumor Foundation in San Francisco and in 1985 was appointed to the Duke University Cancer Center Board of Overseers. He is also a member of the Board of Overseers of the University of California, San Diego, and has served on the Board of the University of California, San Diego Cancer Center Foundation since 1984.

Mr. Preuss sold ISSCO, Integrated Software Systems Corporation in 1986, ISSCO, a San Diego-based company, was founded by Mr. Preuss in 1970; it was purchased by Computer Associates International, Inc. of Garden City, New Jersey in late 1986. ISSCO was originally formed without capital, and grew under the leadership of Mr. Preuss as President, and later as Chairman of the Board, into one of the world's leading independent developers and suppliers of visual information systems software used to create high quality graphics for business, government, scientific, engineering, and project management applications. At the time of its sale, ISSCO software was marketed through a network of 33 sales offices, and was a publicly traded company on NASDAQ.

Formerly a founder and long-time director of the Board of the National Computer Graphics the Board of the National Computer Graphics Association, Mr. Preuss attends and actively participates in NCGA's annual convention. He serves on the Boards of Directors of the following San Diego-based companies: Biosym Technologies, Inc., AcuCobol, Inc., and Dr. Design, Inc. He is a member of the Board of Directors of BIOCOM, a support organization for the biotechnology industry in Southern California.

Mr. Preuss was born in Berlin, Germany, and received his undergraduate education at the Technical University of Hanover. He was elected to an honorary fellowship, which allowed him to enroll in the Graduate Schoo.l of Mathematics at the University of California, San Diego, where he earned a Master's Degree. He then entered a Ph.D. program at that university. The field of investigation was complex analysis, and he subsequently completed the research needed for a doctorate. The founding of ISSCO interrupted the completion of his doctoral thesis.
