The Preuss Foundation, Inc.

Grant Policies and Guidelines

The Preuss Foundation selects grant recipients whose research proposals reflect the major goals of the foundation. The foundation does not encourage unsolicited letters of application, preferring to seek out its grantees.

Since the foundation's inception in 1985, over 300 on-site visits have been made by the President and the Scientific Director to over 100 medical institutions.

The potential grantee is asked to submit a 3-5 page narrative summary of the proposed research project with a budget. The project is then submitted to a three month medical peer review and personal, on-site visits by the President and the Director of Science are initiated. All Preuss Foundation grants are funded for one year at a time with the possibility of renewal if appropriate at the end of each year.

Preuss Foundation grants are given only to innovative research projects that are on the cutting edge of explorations in the field of brain tumor disease. And, the foundation awards grants only to institutions that are tax exempt under Sections 501(c)(3) of the United States Internal Revenue Service Code.

The foundation does not fund administrative overheads, laboratory maintenance, indirect costs, or equipment. The foundation does consider direct support for post-doctoral fellowships, research salaries, and to a lesser degree, research supplies and animals.

TERMS OF GRANT AWARDS

All Preuss Foundation grantees are required to:
Meet with foundation personnel or its representatives biannually to discuss the progress and results of the research projects undertaken;

Submit, within 90 days of the completion of the grant award period, summary of their research results. Additionally, funding with not be considered prior to the foundation's receipt of the summary.

GRANT AWARD PAYMENTS

When a grant is awarded, the recipient is notified with a contract letter outlining the purposes and terms of the award. Direct support grants are given in two installments. The first installment is paid upon receipt by the foundation of a countersigned copy of the grant award letter accompanied by an invoice requesting payment. The second installment is paid ninety (90) days after the first upon receipt by the foundation of a written request for payment.

Whenever a grantee institution is awarded a direct support grant with a matching fund requirement, the matching funds must be forwarded by the foundation. The full matching requirement of both parties will then be forwarded to the grantee institution.

It is the intention of The Preuss Foundation to encourage new donor support for brain tumor research in the geographical areas funded. It is our hope that through the matching fund process, the foundation will mobilize monies that, prior to a Preuss Foundation grant, were not previously committed to brain tumor research in the grantee institution's own community.
