The Preuss Foundation, Inc.
Philosophy and Goals of the Foundation
The Preuss Foundation for Brain Tumor Research was incorporated in February, 1985 with a $3.5
million initial gift given by its founders, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Preuss.
The goals of the foundation are threefold:
- 1) Providing seed money:
- To provide seed grants for initial support of innovative brain tumor research projects.
- 2) Increasing scientific communication:
- To increase communication among brain tumor researchers. To facilitate this goal, The Preuss Foundation holds a series of one to two day research communication seminars in specific fields of scientific investigation. The foundation also sponsors a three-day conference retreat that brings Preuss Foundation grantees and selected scientists together to share current, ongoing research efforts from a range of scientific disciplines. These conferences and seminars are designed to enhance future directions of research through communication.
- 3) Expanding the field of brain tumor research:
- To expand the field of primary brain tumor research by encouraging bright and motivated scientists who were otherwise reluctant to enter cancer research because of lack of funding.
The American Cancer Society estimates that:
- Over 15,000 children and adults will be diagnosed as having cancer of the brain and central nervous system this year.
- Over 10,000 children and adults will die from these malevolent brain tumors.
- Primary brain tumors continue to be the second most common cause of cancer death in children.
The Preuss Foundation is trying to reduce these appalling statistics by directly supporting basic research projects in the United States and abroad. The foundation continues to explore new and innovative avenues of treatment.
