While the foundation was initially funded by a private grant, it nonetheless actively encourages and pursues a broad spectrum of contributions from individuals, family, public, and corporate foundations to ensure the continuance of brain tumor research. The Preuss Foundation is able to involve its donors directly with the project researcher designated by the donor to receive his or her gift. Since all the projects funded by The Preuss Foundation are innovative and on the cutting edge of science, this unique donor-researcher relationship is both exciting and rewarding. All contributions to The Preuss Foundation are designated in their entirety to the research project agreed upon by the donor and the foundation, and are never used to defray foundation administrative expenses. The Internal Revenue Service has classified The Preuss Foundation as a private foundation under Section 509(a) of the Internal Revenue Code. The Preuss Foundation encourages the development of a personal relationship between the donor and the researcher chosen by the donor for support. Preuss Foundation Innovators include two very unique groups of research supporters. The Explorers and The Crusaders. Members of both groups are invited to meet with the President of The Preuss Foundation and the researchers at social events designed to review the year's achievements, and to discuss the future plans of the research teams and the foundation.
Each donor who joins either of the support groups may designate funds to any current or future project of The Preuss Foundation, in agreement with the President, Peter Preuss.
